sprints coaching

After 15 fantastic years our amazing Martin Cook has decided to step down as head track coach. We couldn't be more grateful for his commitment to this role - he gave everything and had a huge impact on every athlete that got to work with him. His expert guidance saw countless athletes smash their PBs, along with club and championship records, and earn many medals on the BUCS stage!
There's no one better to keep this momentum going than our new sprints coach Alex Wilson. We're really excited to welcome Alex, the 2025 Young Coach of the Year! He's been coaching in Sheffield for over five years and, in that time, has worked with athletes of all different ages, abilities, and disciplines. His enthusiasm and passion for athletics is evident in everything he does and his friendly nature and unwavering support makes everyone feel at home on the track.
With Alex in charge we can't wait to see what the 2026/2027 season holds for the club!

Coaching Philosophy & Style
I believe openness and honesty between the coach and athlete is the best way to be. I want to understand you as a person first, and as an
athlete second. This way, we can work better together towards your athletic goals, whatever they may be! I always find it hard to talk about
myself, so I thought I would use the words of my athletes and their parents to help me answer how I coach/my coaching style.

How our sessions will look
Following a group warm-up, we will split into two groups (Short sprints & Long sprints) to do our specific sessions. The short sprint sessions will
be led by Jake, and the long sprints overseen by myself. The type of training we will do will depend on the block we are in, however, we will
cover all the key components of sprint training across the week. The focus will be geared around the university competition schedule, but I
know many athletes will also have other club/ national competitions in the season. If this is the case for you, I would encourage you to come
and have a chat and we can work these into a plan to make sure you get the most out of training and achieve your own personal goals.
Our training days will be Monday and Wednesday evenings, in addition to Saturday mornings. The only change to this layout will be if anyone
runs 400mH. I am fortunate enough to coach a few 400mH athletes (who in the summer) train on a Thursday evening instead of Wednesday
evening. This is so I can keep the coaching quality of both sessions high, and ensure every athlete gets the focus they deserve and need.
More about me
I got into athletics coaching after covid and started my own group with the aim of working with juniors, helping them enjoy the sport, and
develop through to senior level with them. This has afforded me some absolutely unbelievable opportunities and experiences which I would not
have imagined 5 years ago. I am so proud of every athlete I coach, and I have so many fun stories/memories from our journey together.
Coaching has taken me to local, regional, national, and international competitions with my athletes. I have also been very fortunate as a coach
to have been nominated, and win the UK Coaching Young Coach of the Year award in 2025, as well as be selected as one of the England
team coaches at the Home nations 5km event in September. I am looking forward to start this next chapter in my coaching career working with
the University of Sheffield Athletics Club.
Although coaching is my first and foremost priority, I also still compete myself. I love to run in the 400m & 800m, however, if you have seen me
at a Northern League match with my club City of Sheffield, you may have seen me flying over the 110mH, throwing, and filling any gaps for
those points!
